UPDATED: Fairfax County Public Schools Closed Monday; County Offices Open

Fairfax County Public Schools calls off school due to icy roads from winter storm.

On Monday, Dec. 9, all Fairfax County public schools will be closed, and administrative offices will open at 12 noon, FCPS announced Sunday.

The following activities in schools and on school grounds are canceled:

  • extracurricular activities
  • interscholastic contests
  • team practices
  • field trips
  • middle school after-school programs
  • professional learning and training courses
  • all adult and community education classes
  • recreation programs and community use by outside groups not affiliated with FCPS
  • School Age Child Care (SACC) centers.

Monday School Board Meetings: Due to inclement weather, the Monday, Dec. 9 School Board work sessions are rescheduled as follows:

  • 11:30 a.m. - Audit Committee meeting
  • 12:30 p.m. - All-day work sessions

Monday's forecast is for "rain or freezing rain before 1 p.m., then a chance of rain," according to the National Weather Service. The high should be near 39. The chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 inch is possible.

For Monday night, the forecast calls for a "slight chance of rain before 3 a.m., then a slight chance of snow." The low will be around 29 and the chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Fairfax County Government offices will be open Monday, though employees have been granted unscheduled leave. Emergency service personnel should report as scheduled.

Fairfax County Circuit Court, District Court and Juvenile Relations are all closed Monday. 

Fairfax County Park Authority events and classes area canceled, but the facilities will remain open. 

Fairfax County Connector operations are running as normal.

District of Columbia Government will operate on a two-hour delay. 

Federal Agencies will operate on a two-hour delay with the option of unscheduled leave and telework.
