Langley Principal Talks Honors Classes With Parents

Langley High School Principal Matt Ragone held an informational meeting about the new honors classes with parents on Tuesday.

Principal Matt Ragone met with more than 100 parents on Tuesday morning about the to implement more honors level humanities classes in Fairfax County high schools.

Starting this fall, Langley will offer five new honors classes, including world history, 11th and 12th grade English, U.S. history and government. Currently, the school only offers college prep-level classes and Advanced Placement classes. The new classes have been designed to offer another option to students who have trouble carrying the workload of an Advanced Placement class.

At the meeting, parents expressed frustration that students would be required to choose an AP humanities tract or an honors humanities tract. For example, if a student elected to take an Advanced Placement history course, he or she would also be expected to take an Advanced Placement English course.

Ragone insisted that the linking the courses this way helped reduce stress levels and student workloads.

He also emphasized that the new honors tract would not mean the college prep-level classes would be a watered down version of the current courses.
