Marshall High’s Playoff Run Over

Chantilly High knocks Marshall out of playoffs in a 66-45 win.

George Marshall High School’s playoff run has come to an end after losing 66-45 to Chantilly High Monday night in the first round of the Northern Region Tournament.

The Statesmen were down 34-19 at the half and when they returned to the court for the second half, they didn’t warm up. Instead, Head Coach Dan Hale said he told his team in the locker room you can only win games you’re down in two points at a time. Senior Douglas Turpin heard Hale loud and clear and scored the first points of the second half on drive into the paint.

Marshall outscored Chantilly 18-5 in the third quarter and pulled within two points of the Chargers. Hale said he was proud of his team for fighting and making it a 39-37 ball game.

“I was proud of my boys for coming back,” Hale said. “We were able to convert on a couple but in the fourth quarter Chantilly stepped it up.”

The Chargers started the fourth quarter on a 17-0 run against Marshall before Statesman senior Connor Barrand hit a three pointer with 4:11 left in the game.

“Give Chantilly credit,” Hale said. “They came out and established a physical game.”

Hale said this was the Statesmen’s (17-8) first trip to the playoffs in four seasons. He said he was proud his team made Chantilly earn their win.

Barrand led the Statesmen in scoring with 15 points and Turpin added 13 more points. Chantilly’s Tyler Femi led all scores with 20 points and Raeshawn Smith scored 16.
