What's the Going Rate for Roof Repairs?

A bad roof is one repair homeowners can't afford to put off for long. But just how much will the fix set you back?

Written by Theresa Waldrop

When a roof needs repair, there's no way to get around it. What's less certain is how much you'll need to pay for the job.

Roof repairs cost U.S. homeowners on average between $707 and $1,045 per job, according to homeadvisor.com, with the minimum cost at $200 and the maximum at $1,500. The site gets this number by crunching data submitted by members who’ve recently repaired a roof.

The final cost depends on a number of things, as Roofingnetworks.com points out: the size of the area that needs repairing, the materials used (tile costs much more than asphalt shingles, for example), the slant of the roof, how easy it is to access the roof, and how many stories the house has. All in all, you can expect to pay from $5.42 to $7.05 per square foot, according to Homewyse.com. Areas around chimneys and skylights will add to the cost.

So what's the standard cost here in town? If you've had your roof repaired recently, who did you use and would you recommend them?

If you want to go the DIY route, you need to be capable of determining things like whether the damage is from structural problems. If you can do it yourself, you’ll save as much as $75 an hour for labor, according to Fixr.com
