Madison and Langley took the field as scheduled Friday night, and the Warhawks trailed at halftime, but came out after the break and quickly took a 9-8 lead.

With 16:36 left in the game and the momentum swinging in Madisonโ€™s favor, severe weather rolled in, sending fans and players scrambling for cover.ย

As the lightning lingered, the game was postponed until the following evening.ย

After another weather delay on the teams' 6 p.m. game Saturday, players finally returned to the field. Tough defense by Rachel Brennan, Maddie Roberts and Christina Rusinski and numerous key stops by winning goalie Sigourney Heerink, along with aggressive offense, led to a 17-9 win.

It was a double sweep for the Warhawks, as Madison's boys acrosse team also took the Liberty District championship from Langley on Friday night.

Both teams move onto the Northern Region Tournament, which begins Tuesday night.

The Madison girls take on Edison at 5 p.m.; the boys game follows at 7 p.m. when they face Washington-Lee. As No.1 seeds, both teams have earned home turf for as long as they remain in the single elimination tournament.
