Food for Trees, 'James and the Giant Peach,' JFK Walk and More This Weekend

The weekend is here! How are you going to spend it in and around McLean?

Food for Trees: Plan on getting a fresh-cut Christmas tree or wreath this year? Get one through Food for Trees and help local families in need at the same time. Trees are offered at more than 50 percent off in exchange for a pledge of $35 in food donations to benefit Share of McLean and the food bank at McLean High School. Sunday, Nov. 24, is the last day to pre-order your tree. More info here.

'James and the Giant Peach': The Langley School's middle school students will present "James and the Giant Peach" on stage for three nights this week. The students will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the school's Sherman Arts Center, 1411 Balls Hill Road. Tickets are $8 each. More info here. And don't forget: There's still time to catch a murder mystery over at Cooper Middle School.

JFK Walk: Join the FreeWalkers for a 22-mile walk on Friday to pay homage to President John F. Kennedy on the 50th anniversary of his death. The free event starts at 6:30 a.m. Friday at Roosevelt Island, goes through the district and culminates at the Kennedy gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery. More information here.

Slimming Before Trimming: All ages are welcome for the Herndon Turkey Trot 5K. Overall male and female winners win a Thanksgiving dinner. Pre-registration is $15. The trot is 4 p.m. Saturday at the Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave., Herndon. See our complete list of regional Turkey Trots.

Meet ABC's 'The Chew' Chef: Enjoy a tea and cookie pairing with celebrity chef Carla Hall from ABC's "The Chew" at 6 p.m. Friday at Capital Teas in the Mosaic Shopping District, 2910 District Ave., Fairfax.

Cardinal Nature Study Adventure: Children ages 8 to 12 are invited to join a naturalist at Potomac Overlook Regional Park, at 2845 N. Marcey Road in Arlington, to investigate the park's many creatures and features — and create a journal along the way. The journal is included in the $7 registration fee. The adventure starts at 4 p.m. Friday. More information here.

Military Tribute, Typhoon Relief Ice Skating: Pentagon Row will host a military tribute ice skating night starting at 6 p.m. Friday. All members of the military and their families will skate for free at the newly expanded Pentagon Row Ice Rink with a military ID. More information here. Also, all weekend long, $1 from every ice skating ticket purchased will go to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts for typhoon victims in the Philippines. Learn more about that here.

Sunshine on Stage: Jonathan Edwards takes the stage at The Barns at Wolf Trap this weekend. Edwards is best known for his single “Sunshine (Go Away Today)” Tickets are $25 for the show, which is 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Barns at Wolf Trap, 1635 Trap Road, Vienna.
