The tradition of celebrating McLean
The day was perfect. Kids shrieked joyfully. The scent of cheeseburgers and bratwursts permeated the air. All day Saturday, McLean celebrated its hometown in a way that could only be described as McLean Day. Expecting over 10,000 attendees, the McLean Community Center combined a carnival with a boardwalk and placed it right in the middle of Lewinsville Park where the games, the rides, and especially the food were a hit with residents of all ages. “The smell of kabob is making it feel like a large carnival and the all these big rides remind me of something that would be usually much larger like the Fairfax Fair,” said Devon Jones, an '09 Langley graduate. Second year board has kept votes secret
Two incumbents, a newcomer and two students have won seats on the McLean Community Center board. For the second year in a row the Community Center Elections Committee has taken the highly unusual action of refusing to release the vote totals. The winners of the election which was held at McLean Day today were incumbents Susan Bourgeois and Craig Richardson, who ran as a write-in candidate and newcomer Laurelie Wallace. The contests were in the student races where Malika Nimmagadda defeated Craig McKenzie for the McLean High School seat on the board. Drew Armstrong defeated Will Ferrer for the Langley High seat. Fun Day in McLean
5:04pm. McLean Day is now closed. Rides have stopped. Crowds are rapidly leaving the park. Chain Bridge Road from Westmoreland to Great Falls is now clogged with traffic. Vendors are breaking now booths. The vendors must be out by 7 p.m. 2:49pm. At height of McLean Day. Traffic crawling on Chain Bridge Rd. Better: take Dolley Madison (Rte123) to shuttle location. What: Election of three adults and two students to the McLean Community Center board. Why you care: This 11-member board can raise your property taxes. This board has accumulated a $12 million surplus by collecting more in taxes than they actually need to operate the Community Center.
