Top-seeded teams from Virginia High School League's Northern Virginia districts return to the field this week to battle for the Northern Region title. The Northern Region Boys Lacrosse Tournament begins Tuesday night. Top seeds from district play host the first round. Most games begin at 7 p.m.; double-headers will feature the girls game at 5 p.m. and the boys game at 7 p.m. The playoffs are single-elimination. To find your team, click on the bracket above. Virginia Crew: Langley, McLean Place Well in Finals

At Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships, the teams from McLean's high schools brought home five first-place finishes.

The men's and women's crew from Langley and McLean both came home victorious from the state championship Saturday at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championship (VASRA).  The McLean women's crew took first place in the Lightweight Eight with a time of 5:38:70. McLean men's crew took first place in the 1st Eight Petite at 4:54:80. Langley's women took first place in the Women's 1st Four (6:05:20) and the Women's 2nd Four (6:52:10) and the Lightweight Four. Virginia Girls Lacrosse: Madison Defeats Langley

After two nights of lightning delays, Warhawks top Saxons in the Liberty district final.

Nobody ever said winning was easy. This weekend, the Madison High School girls lacrosse team certainly did it the hard way, defeating Langley High School in a come-from-behind 17-9 win Saturday in the Liberty District Championships after waiting out two lightning delays on consecutive nights.  It's the third consecutive Liberty District title for the Warhawks — all of them taken in games against Langley. Madison and Langley took the field as scheduled Friday night, and the Warhawks trailed at halftime, but came out after the break and quickly took a 9-8 lead. With 16:36 left in the game and the momentum swinging in Madison’s favor, severe weather rolled in, sending fans and players scrambling for cover.  As the lightning lingered, the game…

Virginia Lacrosse: Madison Boys Top Langley for Liberty District TItle

Girls game postponed until 6 p.m. Saturday after lightning delays the 2013 Girls Lacrosse Liberty District Championship.

On Friday night, the Madison High School boys lacrosse team did something it hadn't done in years: post a win against  the Langley Saxons. The Warhawks defeated Langley 10-2 on the Saxons' home turf on Friday night, taking the Liberty District Championship and entering next week's tournament as a top seed. Madison and Langley — five-time district champs — both stood at 11-5 (6-1) entering last night's title game, tied with Stone Bridge (11-3, 6-1) for best record in the district. The Warhawks got off to a fast start, according to early game information from dmvlacrosse. Madison led 5-0 after the first quarter. Lacrosse: Langley Girls, Boys Vie for Liberty District Title

Langley faces Madison in a boys-girls double header Friday evening.

Last year, the Madison High School defeated Langley High School in an 18-17 thriller to win the Liberty District championship. Friday evening, the teams are set up for a repeat of last year's title game, as the Warhawks and Saxons face off at Langley High School. Langley girls' lacross head Coach Richard DeSomma said his team is probably a combination of nervous and excited.  "I think we all know it's going to be competitive. Historically, it's a big match up for both teams," he said. Poll: Who Will Win the McLean v. Langley Baseball, Softball Games?

The two teams are playing Friday evening at McLean High School.

The Langley High School Saxons will face the McLean High School Highlanders for the last regular-season varsity baseball and softball games of the season Friday evening at 6:30. Both the softball and baseball teams face off at McLean High School. Baseball Both baseball teams have winning records this season. The McLean v. Langley varsity baseball game is in the running to be WUSA 9’s Game of the Week, the Langley student newspaper Saxon Scope reported. When the two teams met in April, Langley defeated McLean 12 – 4. Virginia's 'Bike Friendliness' Up a Notch, According to National Advocacy Group

Virginia is No. 1 in the South but No. 16 nationwide in terms of "bicycle friendliness," according to the League of American Cyclists.

Virginia is ranked No. 1 in the South and No. 16 in the country in terms of "bicycle friendliness," according to the League of American Cyclists. Save the Date: Joe Cassella Foundation 5K Run/Walk

The annual event in Great Falls will benefit a children with cancer and the Joe Cassella Foundation.

The Joe Cassella Foundation’s fourth annual 5K run and walk is set for Sunday, May 19 in Great Falls. This year, the race’s proceeds will help support an 8-year-old Fairfax girl who has brain cancer, a 10-year-old Centreville girl who has bone cancer, and the Joe Cassella Foundation. The foundation gives grants to families in the area whose children need medical treatment. The May 19 event includes a kids’ fun run before the 5K, a post-race party, silent auction and entertainment. Events start at 8:30 a.m. at the Great Falls Village Center.  Registration fees to participate are $30/adult ($35 on race day), and $10/child 12 & under ($15 on race day).
