Favola Accuses Merrick of Running 'Stealth Campaign'

Tuesday night fundraiser draws long list of Democratic elected officials and activists

Democratic state Senate candidate Barbara Favola accused her opponent of running a “stealth campaign” and avoiding questions on tough issues at a fundraiser Tuesday night in the Ashton Heights community. Favola didn’t mention McLean Republican Caren Merrick by name, but she did criticize mail pieces circulating in the district on Merrick’s behalf for not identifying the candidate as a Republican except in the fine print. “She is a very conservative Republican. She is not a moderate Republican. She is a Tea Party Republican,” Favola said. Favola, an Arlington County Board member, accused Merrick of refusing to give a direct answer on raising taxes, either to invest in education or transportation. Favola Appears at Alexandria Forum for Senate Candidates, Merrick Declined

Forum for Three Senate Races

Candidates in three state senate races fielded questions from constituents at a candidates’ brunch at Beth El Hebrew Congregation in Alexandria on Sunday. The brunch was hosted by the Brotherhood of Beth El Congregation. 36th District candidates Jeff Frederick and Sen. Toddy Puller. 39th District candidates Miller Baker and Sen. George Barker.  31st District candidate Barbara Favola. It was announced that Favola's Republican opponent Caren Merrick had declined the invitation. Immigration, transportation, HOT lanes, and BRAC were discussed at length. The "mudslinging" Democratic primary in the Virginia Senate district that includes McLean even attracted the attention of The Washington Post last week. "... It’s one of the most heated, unpleasant races in recent memory," said the Post story diving into the race that pits Arlington County board member Barbara A. Favola against lawyer Jaime Areizaga-Soto.
