New county assessment notices arrive
Some McLean homeowners will notice that their property values have declined when they open their new assessment notices this week. The Fairfax County Department of Tax Administration started mailing the 352,364 real estate assessment notices to county taxpayers Tuesday. Overall values in the McLean zip code area declined .11 percent. Values in neighboring Great Falls declined 1.82 percent, the biggest decline in the county. McLean and Great Falls were among five zip code areas in Fairfax with declining values. (See map accompanying this story.) Proposed Budget: No Frills, Taxpayers Pay More
Fairfax County taxpayers can begin commenting on an essentially no-frills $6.7 billion proposed county budget which includes higher bills for homeowners that the Fairfax County Executive presented to the Board of Supervisors Tuesday. Today, taxpayers can chat online with the county executive about his proposed budget at 2pm. Submit questions now. The budget proposed by County Executive Anthony Griffin restores no cuts in services made in the past several years. It includes a two percent pay raise for county employes beginning July 1, an increase in police overtime, and half the amount requested by county schools. Tony Griffin attends McLean church
Fairfax County Executive Anthony H. Griffin, whose name is hardly a household word but who runs one of the largest counties in the U.S., yesterday announced his plans to retire. Griffin, who attends church in McLean, has served as the county’s administrative leader since 2000, the second-longest tenure since the position was created in 1952, according to the county statement announcing the retirement. "He's an outstanding county executive," said Dranesville Supervisor John Foust. "It will be very difficult to replace him."
