Five things principals, educators, coaches, PTA members, parents and students could do to take advantage of McLean Patch this school year.
School started last week in Fairfax County. Patch will be there to cover back-to-school moments and events throughout the rest of the school year, but we can’t do it without you. To make sure you get the most out of Patch this school year, we invite you to get active in the news-gathering process. There are five things you can do to make sure your school and its students get all the coverage they deserve from Patch: 1. Tell about big events and accomplishments: If you have a school-related story idea you’d like us to cover, then let us know about it! Send us a news tip with details and the person(s) we should contact for more information about the story idea. E-mail brendan.j.oreilly@patch.com. 2. Add your event listings: Have an upcoming …

From email to e-newsletters, Blackboard to e-books at the library, tech tools are very much a part of the back-to-school equation
Back to school 2012 is a bit different than in earlier years. While some things will always be handled via paper and pen, technology tools are helping to make sure that parents are informed on the issues big and small. Here are a few ways that FCPS and your child's teacher will use technology to keep in touch and provide resources to help your child learn. KIT and KIT-Plus KIT (Keep in Touch) and KIT-Plus are the e-newsletter services that provide up-to-the-minute information for the public on school delays or closings, emergencies, information about FCPS programs and news stories. Parents, students and employees are automatically enrolled via their contact information provided to the schools. Parents and community members can also select …

How stay-at-home parents fight the "empty house" rut when kids return to school.
Moms everywhere jump for joy when the stores stock up on backpacks and sharpened pencils because it means the school year is approaching and they will soon have eight hours for themselves. However, once the morning school drop-off is done or the bus pulls away, sometimes returning to an empty house is daunting. After a long summer of being at the kids' beck and call, a stay at home parents may feel a loss for what to do with all the free time, and find the silence in the usually loud house rather eerie. Not only is the stay-at-home parent relieved of child care duties for the majority of the day, but instead of being at the center of their children's world ("Mom, I'm Hungry!", "Mom, I need help!", "Mom, can we go to the pool?"), she …

The school's expansion project includes new classrooms and improvements to the cafeteria, among other projects.
The $6 million long-awaited expansion of Spring Hill Elementary School on Lewinsville Road has progressed through the summer. The project includes adding 12 new classrooms, enlarging the cafeteria with a new stage, enlarging the drop-off area, and a new roof, according to John Torre, the spokesperson for Fairfax County Public Schools. The expanded drop-off area should help ease traffic jams that now clog Lewinsville Road in the morning and the afternoon. The expansion is scheduled for completion September 2013, Torre said. This project also includes a controversial new stoplight and crosswalk at the school across from the Spring Hill Recreation Center. That light is scheduled to be installed in about a month, Torre said. Spring Hill …
