Boy Scouts is open to young men ages 11 through 18.
Eagle Scouts Will Minor, Cameron Hudson and Aaron Ahlgrimm of Boy Scout Troop 1130 in McLean were recently honored at the Chain Bridge District Eagle Scout recognition dinner. The dinner was held March 15 at Marymount University in Arlington. Eagle Scout is the highest advancement rank in scouting and requires young men to fulfill requirements in the areas of leadership, service and outdoor skills. Also honored at the dinner was Jeffrey Nolan of Troop 1130, as the winner of the Chain Bridge District oratory contest. Nolan competed against the best orators of the district's 29 Boy Scout troops and was selected as the overall competition winner. Boy Scouts is open to young men age 11 to 18. Antonio Vasquez, 14, spearheaded a book collection drive for children and teens affected by Superstorm Sandy.
McLean High School freshman Antonio Vasquez wanted to do something for his Eagle Scout project to help those affected by Superstorm Sandy. The timeline involved in launching an Eagle Scout project didn’t allow him to start one right away. But his family soon discovered a post on a relative’s Facebook page about the Bridge of Books Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides books for underprivileged and at-risk children in New Jersey. With the help of the community, he was able to deliver on the project. “It was a great experience for me,” Antonio said. “I really enjoyed it, and it was very heartwarming. Editor's Note: The following article was submitted by Chris Hudson, an adult leader with Troop 1130. Boy Scout Troop 1130, sponsored by Charles Wesley United Methodist Church in McLean, earned the Honor Troop Award at summer camp the week of July 29 at Rodney Scout Reservation in North East, Md. In achieving the award, the troop received the highest marks, camp-wide, for a clean, safe campsite, and participated in a number of camp-wide competitions and events. There were many highlights over the week. Thanks to the residents of McLean and Falls Church for their donations and patronage of the Troop’s spring mulch sale, many of the Scouts were able to attend summer camp.
