Their campaign message Saturday morning was targeted to women voters.
Ann Romney, standing under the gazebo roof in McLean Central Park Saturday morning with a group largely made up of women, stressed that her husband cared about women and would take care of them if he is elected president on Nov. 6. Romney campaigned for her husband in Virginia on Saturday. The state's importance in the presidential race seems to grow as Election Day nears. "It's all about Northern Virginia," said Virginia-based GOP pollster Whit Ayres, in an interview Friday with CNN's John King. "So many people have moved into Northern Virginia, particularly from the Northeast -- Democratic areas -- that they've turned a solid red state into a purple state." Ann Romney's first stop was McLean Central Park on Saturday morning, where she …

U.S. Senate candidate responds to 10 questions posed by Patch readers in Northern Virginia.
A few weeks ago, we asked Patch readers in Northern Virginia to throw out some questions for George Allen and Tim Kaine, both vying for the U.S. Senate seat in Virginia. So you asked and the candidates answered. Read George Allen's responses here. Tim Kaine's answers, published below, are unedited. 1. There is considerable reporting in the popular media that Social Security and Medicare are in financial ruin and in need of a fix, but every time one person dares to speak-up and suggest constructive measures to save the system, the other candidate attacks that person for being insensitive to the needs of seniors and claims the proponent of modifications wants to dismantle the programs. How would you address these issues knowing full well …

If you haven’t yet registered to vote, the deadline is just a few days away. Virginia officials have mailed out more than 4.6 million voter registration cards to residents. The State Board of Elections is telling voters who have not received a voter registration card to check their registration record at www.SBE.Virginia.gov. Nationwide, an estimated 6 million people didn’t vote in the 2008 elections because they either did not know how to register or because they missed the voter registration deadline. The voter registration deadline in Virginia this year is Monday, Oct. 15. Fairfax County's website has a lot of useful information for people who need to register or have questions about whether their current voter registration is valid. …

The candidates responded and we've published their answers online.

Money to prevent flooding in lower Huntington, money for libraries, fire stations and parks will be on the ballots for Fairfax County voters in November.
In addition to choosing a president, Fairfax County voters will be deciding on millions in funding for libraries, parks, public safety and stormwater through bond referenda. The four bond issues are: None of the bonds are expected to raise tax rates for McLean residents or any residents in Fairfax County. If approved by voters, the $30 million stormwater bond will pay to build a levee and pumping station to protect the Huntington neighborhood from flooding. During the past 10 years, three floods have damaged homes, vehicles and other property in this neighborhood, and there are 180 homes in the FEMA-designated floodplain that are at risk in the future. At Fairfax County’s request, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers studied the best ways to …

Changing demographics and the weight of Northern Virginia turn Virginia "purple" this year and make the commonwealth a swing state to watch.
In the past few weeks, both President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney have visited Virginia and said that the swing state may be one of the deciding states in this year’s election. It’s known that there are several key states in the electoral college this year. Ohio — which is also a swing state — and Florida are both crucial states along with a few others. No Republican president has ever won the election without winning Ohio. Mark Rozell, a professor of public policy at George Mason University, said Virginia is now one of the swing states that will likely determine the outcome of this year’s election. One reason: Virginia voters had not chosen a Democrat for president since the 1960s, but then-candidate Barack Obama won…
Romney supporters campaigned for their candidate outside the new Obama office in McLean on Monday night.
Nearly 250 Obama supporters from McLean and Great Falls turned out Monday night to the now-shuttered Blockbuster store on Chain Bridge Road to mark the grand opening of President Obama's new campaign office in McLean. The space will be used to organize phone banks, neighborhood canvassing efforts and other field operations to boost chances for the president's reelection in Virginia, where Obama is just slightly ahead of former Gov. Mitt Romney, the GOP presidential nominee, in recent polls. The event was headlined by Democratic heavyweights, including Dranesville Supervisor John Foust, state Sen. Barbara Favola, former DNC chair Terry McAuliffe and Congressman Jim Moran. "When you walk out that door, you stop every person you see," said …
