Police Investigating Fraudulent Tax Returns in Fairfax County

More than 75 Fairfax County residents have had false tax returns filed in their names—here are some tips to protect your identity.

While some are under the stress of a looming tax deadline less than a week away, some Fairfax County taxpayers are dealing with a different problem. More than 75 people have called Fairfax County police complaining their identities have been stolen and false tax returns filed in their names. Lucy Caldwell, a police spokeswoman, said taxpayers don’t realize they’re victims until they go to file their tax returns and are told that the IRS has already received and documented their returns. Victims are being told by the IRS to call their local police department, Caldwell said. “Here in Fairfax County, they file an online report and will receive their number electronically from our system,” Caldwell said. “Supervisors in the Financial Crimes …

Fairfax County Police Step Up Pedestrian Enforcement

Following two fatal accidents in the past month, the department kicks off springtime enforcement and education initiatives.

In the wake of an accident that left a 54-year-old Falls Church man dead Thursday night and another last month that killed a woman near the Dunn Loring Metro in Vienna, Fairfax County police are stepping up their pedestrian safety enforcement. Fairfax County police are still investigating last week's accident. What they do know: Around 10:50 p.m. Thursday, a vehicle hit Herman Bartlett as he walked across the street in the 5800 block of Leesburg Pike. Lucy Caldwell, a police spokeswoman, said Bartlett was rushed to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Caldwell said the driver of the car stayed at the scene, and no charges are pending. She also said speed and alcohol were not factors. In March, Ai Ying Zhu, 53, of Falls …

Affordable housing continues to be a major topic of discussion in Alexandria. The Virginia Department of Transportation sold Hunting Point, two eight-story apartment buildings, to a realty firm. Alexandria's City Council had asked that any purchaser not turn the buildings into luxury apartments that could displace its current tenants who require more affordable housing. That message was passed on to the new buyers, according to VDOT, but was not a condition of the sale. 19. On the west side of Alexandria, the City Planning Commission gave the go-ahead to major rezoning in the Beauregard area that will tear down …

As Saturday night turned to Sunday morning, the lights atop Fairfax County Police Department cruisers along Leesburg pike lit up the night sky like swarms of blue fireflies. The routine traffic stops were plentiful but the McLean District officers weren’t finding many drivers under the influence. The diminishing number of driving while intoxicated arrests is a trend that has been consistent in the district since 2011. That year, 433 people were arrested and charged with DWI. In 2012, that number dropped to 350 DWI arrests in the McLean District - which covers Merrifield, Dunn Loring, Falls Church, McLean, Tyson’s Corner and Great Falls. “I do feel very good getting drunk drivers off the roads,” said McLean District Officer Ali Sepehri, who…
