Memorial Vigils, Police Remembrance Ceremonies Ahead

May 8 marks the anniversary of an attack that killed two Fairfax County Police Department officers.

May is a difficult month for Fairfax County Police Chief David Rohrer and his department. May 8 marks the sixth anniversary of the tragic shooting deaths of two FCPD officers, and memorial vigils for fallen local and national comrades will be held on May 13 and 15. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed May 13-19 as Police Week and May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day in the county. On a dreary afternoon on May 8, 2006, Michael Kennedy, a Centreville teen, opened fire at Detective Vicky Armel and Officer Michael Garbarino in the back parking lot of the Sully District Station. Armel was killed and Garbarino was severely injured. He died from his wounds nine days later. “The officers of the Fairfax County Police Department …

McLean Police Officer Honored for Outstanding Service

Cleared storm debris from blind curve in Great Falls

McLean District Master Police Officer John Alford came across a pile of branches and leaves blocking a blind curve on Wolftrap Road after a heavy storm last August. He got of his car, chainsaw in hand, and started clearing the road. Drivers making the curve would not have seen the branches until it was too late to stop. Alford wanted to prevent an accident – even if that meant risking his life. T.R. Cook, president of the Great Falls Optimist Club, saw Alford hard at work. he even took pictures.  Last week,  the Great Falls club named Alford,  the Citizen of the Month. “What he did touched my heart,” Cook said. “We really appreciate his service to us, to the community.” An 18-year veteran of the Fairfax County Police Department, Alford has…

McLean District Police Commander Shares Priorities, Challenges with MCA

Capt. Dan Janickey meets MCA

The new McLean District Police Commander told the McLean Citizens Association that traffic and pedestrian safety are his top priorities. Capt. Dan Janickey, a 23-year veteran of the Fairfax County Police Department,  began his tenure as the district’s commander in early February. He met the MCA at its monthly meeting last week. Janickey said his department will focus on preventing pedestrian-vehicle collisions and easing traffic in highly congested areas.   The commander said police officers will continue to issue tickets not only to motorists, but also to pedestrians, including instances in which individuals arbitrarily cross roads and disregard crosswalks. He said four pedestrians have been struck by a vehicle this year. One of the …

More than 100 Fairfax County, Vienna, Herndon Officers Honored for Bravery

Annual celebration of public safety officers who protect county residents

The suicidal woman jumped into the black, churning waters of the Potomac River in one of the most treacherous stretches near Great Falls about 1 am last July. Fairfax County Police officer Ali Sepehri, of the McLean District station, couldn't see her but he immediately followed her into the water. "She pushed me under the water once. I thought this was not good. I literally thought I was going to die." Fairfax County Police Officer Federick Yap, of the Reston District station, also jumped into the white water tumbling over very large rocks. "One mistake and you are gone," he said. Struggling together they pulled the woman and themselves to safety. After she was taken away, they returned to their stations, changed uniforms and continued …

Fairfax Citizens Coalition Receives Grant to Combat Underage Drinking

St. Patrick's Day, Spring Break accelerates teen drinking

St. Patrick's Day celebrations which will begin today and spring college breaks in March mean it's a dangerous time for everyone to be on the roads --- especially young people who drink too much. That's the message from the Unified Prevention Coalition, a group which works to battle underage drinking. The legal drinking age in Virginia and the U.S. is 21. The Coalition has joined with the Fairfax County Police Department to use a recently received $200,000 state grant to find ways to reduce underage drinking.
