by Breauna Johnson Girl Scout Cookies are on sale in the Greater Washington Region. Girl Scouts are taking orders now for delivery of cookies starting Feb 6. Girl Scout Cookie booths outside local stores will run from February 22 - March 24, 2013. Each box of Girl Scout Cookies cost $4.00 with all proceeds staying in the Greater Washington Region to support local Girl Scout activities. What started as a bake sale in 1917 has grown into the largest girl-led entrepreneurial business in the nation. Last year in the Greater Washington Region, over 4.5 million boxes of Girl Scout Cookies were sold. National Girl Scout Cookie Day was Friday, and Girl Scouts in McLean are going door to door now selling Thin Mints, Tagalongs and other Girl Scout cookies. Local Girl Scouts were able to sell to friends and family members as early as December, but door-to-door sales did not start until mid-January. Girl Scouts will be selling cookies at several locations and events throughout McLean from Feb. 22 through March 24. An engaging trio of Girls Scout cookie salesgirls met Saturday grocery shoppers at the Anderson Road Safeway. Mehran Sahhad, 11, Dahbia Osborne-Bensaada, 10, and Saima Syeda, 10 were doing a brisk business, under the watchful eyes of their moms. One of their best customers was Dave Stevenson who handed them a $20 bill and said how much can I get. The cookies are $4 a box. New flavor to celebrate 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts
In honor of its 100th anniversary this year, the Girl Scouts have introduced a new cookie to its annual offerings: "Savannah Smiles." The cookie, described as zesty and lemony, takes its name from the birthplace of Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low. Girl Scouts in Northern Virginia began their annual door-to-door sales of Girl Scout cookies recently and will start cookie booth sales on Friday, Feb. 24. Each box of cookies sells for $4 and troops typically keep 65 cents to 70 cents per box; the rest goes to regional programs, training, camping and more. For door-to-door sales, money is collected upon delivery (except for "Gift of Caring" orders, which can be paid for when ordered, since no delivery is involved). Girl Scouts in …
