Mr. Kimm conducts a symphony of services by coordinating and overseeing all aspects of the running of SHARE and its many departments of giving. Our Military Kids, an organization that assists financially-stretched families by providing money for tutoring, sports, arts and music lessons for their children. They help all branches of the military, Guard and Reserve, and are of particular benefit to those who live too far from military bases to use military support services. What she does there? Her mother did not speak English so a neighbor enrolled her in school under the name "Elsie', a name which Mrs.Balcean never liked. She moved to, Gilroy, CA with her family where her father grew produce and made 200 gallons of wine every year. Toni Balcaen celebrates her first 100 years.
Ersilia Maria Antonia Veronica Ghirlanda was born in a small Italian village 100 years ago. At five, she immigrated to the U.S. to join her family in rural California, not speaking a word of English. On Sept. 17, this McLean resident celebrated her 100th birthday at the Tower Club in Tyson's Corner, one of McLean's most prestigious addresses. Her friend, actor Robert DeNiro (yes that Robert DeNiro) was unable to attend, but sent her a birthday video. He recounted a story from an Italian American Federation Dinner in Washington, D.C. He was detained on one side of the room. She was on the other side of the room, so she came to him. She greeted him saying, “I have never walked this far for a man in my life.” About 60 family and friends …
