Moran: Better Training for Teachers Can Improve Success of Autistic Children

Patch is happy to consider opinion articles for publication. We reserve the right to edit for accuracy, clarity and brevity.

The following opinion column was submitted by U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va. Moran is a member of the Congressional Autism Caucus. We recognize the month of April as Autism Awareness and Understanding month. Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, is the fastest growing serious developmental disorder in the United States, affecting nearly two million Americans. One in 88 children is on the autism spectrum by age 8, and boys are five times more likely to have an ASD. A new survey by the Centers for Disease Control indicates that the instance of ASD may actually be higher. And here in Northern Virginia, we are experiencing the prevalence of ASD firsthand. Arlington Public Schools released a report showing a 52 percent increase in enrollment of …

Reps. Moran, Connolly Blast Post Office Decision to Suspend Saturday Service

Connolly writes letter to Postmaster General, asking for legal justification; cites study that says reducing mail volume will lead to revenue loss of $5.2 billion in first year.

Stopping the mail on Saturdays? Not so fast, say two members of the Northern Virginia congressional delegation. Northern Virginia's U.S. Rep. James P. Moran (D-8th) and U.S. Rep Gerald Connolly (D-11th) expressed concern Wednesday afternoon about the U.S. Postal Service's announcement that it plans to suspend delivery of first-class mail service on Saturdays beginning in August. The USPS released a fact sheet Wednesday. “I have great concerns about eliminating Saturday mail delivery," Moran wrote in an email to Patch. "The Postal Service is grappling with major forces outside of its control: an economy increasingly relying on email and the Internet for communication, and a Congress that refuses to address the redundant pension pre-funding …

I do not want an ephermal email advising me to pay my bills - I want a piece of paper to have in case some clerk somewhere forgets what they have done or not done at the merchant/utility business office. If they get the amount wrong - and they have before - the piece of paper shows the right numbers and a telephone number to call to get the right amount off of their computer. Considering where we…   more ›

Reps. Moran and Connolly: Sequestration Likely to Happen

Effects on Northern Virginia economy to be widespread; could send United States back into recession.

Sequestration — significant automatic spending cuts to defense and civilian programs over the next decade — will likely start this spring, and it will mean thousands of layoffs, program eliminations and near-certain economic devastation for Northern Virginia, said Virginia Congressmen Jim Moran (D-8th) and Gerry Connolly (D-11th) Saturday at a town hall meeting with constituents. "You need to be aware that this is probably going to happen," said Moran, who spoke at an annual meeting hosted by Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland. "It's a democracy and things will ultimately play themselves out, but things are not going well right now (in Congress)." Connolly said that sequestration could put the economy back into a recession. Police Close Election Fraud Investigation Into Congressman's Son; No Charges Filed

Activist who released Patrick Moran video would not cooperate with investigation, according to police.

Patrick Moran, the congressman's son who was caught on tape seemingly giving advice on how to skirt voter identification laws, will not face any criminal charges, the Arlington County Police Department announced Thursday. Authorities have concluded their three-month investigation into election offense allegations against Moran, son of U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, a Democrat who represents parts of Northern Virginia. The allegations stemmed from a video released in late October by conservative activist James O'Keefe, whose methods and productions have been called into question in the past. The younger Moran resigned from his father's reelection campaign within hours of the video's release. Moran, 23, lives in South Arlington. Patrick Moran and his …

That's exactly what O'Keefe does. And in this case, the entire O'Keefe-scam was perpetrated while O'Keefe was on Federal probation. O'Keefe might not have been able to release full info because it might have revealed a probation violation. This is the kind of extortion that O'Keefe commonly commits.   more ›

NRA Calls for 'Armed Security' Around Schools

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," the NRA's Wayne LaPierre said.

In an Friday morning press conference, the Fairfax-based National Rifle Association broke its weeklong silence following the horrific shooting of 26 people at a school in Newtown, Conn., and called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around American schools. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for a new kind of American domestic security revolving around armed civilians, arguing that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." "We care about our president, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents," LaPierre said. "Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by Capitol Police officers. Yet, when it comes to our most beloved, innocent, and vulnerable members of the American …

So basically, Mary, posters on Patch can say derogatory things about white males, no problem, but in reply one cannot frankly describe the attitudes of that era about racial issues, because that wouldn't be politically correct. Congratulations on being just another example of journalistic cowardice and the left-wing agenda. Oh, I'm sure you'll deny my characterization of your operation and …   more ›

Moran Introduces 'NRA Members' Gun Safety Act'

Northern Virginia Democrat cites Republican polls of NRA members that show support for five measures.

U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., on Thursday introduced the NRA Members' Gun Safety Act — five gun safety reforms that the congressman's office says are supported by nearly two-thirds of the Fairfax-based National Rifle Associations' members. “The NRA as an organization is out of step with its membership on many commonsense gun safety measures. Polling shows nearly two-thirds of NRA members support the five simple ways to improve gun safety included in this bill,” Moran said in a statement. “The NRA’s absolutist position on gun issues is an impediment to the safety and security of the public. This legislation is designed to highlight that schism, offering popular proposals even NRA members support to prevent more gun-related tragedies.” Moran's…

Great point. I've always considered the USA to be a well-educated, well-oriented country. But with what I'm hearing from the pro-gun people, and after all the ridiculous, completely illogical rhetoric during the campaigns, and some of the bizarre statements by "educated" people in leadership positions, I am seriously concerned about our people's ability to think and construct intelligent thoughts…   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Patrick Moran, Congressman's Son, Responds to Assault Charge

Patch welcomes letters to the editor. We reserve the right to edit for accuracy, clarity and brevity.

Patrick Moran, son of Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, this week pleaded guilty to a simple assault charge stemming from what law enforcement categorized as a domestic violence incident on Dec. 1. The victim — Moran's girlfriend of six months, Kelly Hofmann — subsequently issued a statement saying the incident had been blown out of proportion. A source familiar with the case told Patch this week that Hofmann testified on Moran's behalf in court. [Read the original story: Patrick Moran, Congressman's Son, Pleads Guilty in Domestic Violence Case] Patch has verified the letter's authenticity and is presenting it in its entirety. ~ Hi Jason, For the record, I would like to make clear, as I did in court on this past Wednesday; I take strong …

Patrick Moran, Congressman's Son, Pleads Guilty in Domestic Violence Case

Moran's girlfriend releases statement calling police report 'inaccurate,' saying that she fell.

Patrick Moran, the son of longtime Democratic congressman Jim Moran, pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to simple assault stemming from a domestic violence incident earlier this month in Washington. Moran, 23, who lives on South Randolph Street in Arlington, also remains under investigation by state and local authorities thanks to a video that surfaced before the November election in which he appears to give advice on how to skirt voter identification laws. On Dec. 1, Moran and his girlfriend of six months, Kelly Hofmann, were arguing inside The Getaway in Washington's Columbia Heights neighborhood over Moran talking to another woman, according to a police report supplied to Patch by the District of Columbia court system and first reported …

Rep. Moran, Others Urge GSA to Move FBI to Northern Virginia

Lawmakers ask GSA to consider the area, noting that many FBI employees already live in Northern Virginia.

Rep. Jim Moran (D-8th) along with several other lawmakers sent a letter to the administrator of the General Services Administration urging him to consider Northern Virginia as a possible home for a new FBI headquarters location. Moran, whose district includes the southern half of McLean, was joined by Reps. Frank Wolf, Gerry Connolly and Rob Wittman as well as Sens. Jim Webb and Mark Warner in signing the letter. Their letter follows GSA’s request for information seeking input on a new location for a consolidated FBI headquarters in the Washington, DC region. In their letter to GSA Acting Administrator Daniel Tangherlini, the lawmakers asked GSA to undertake a qualitative “source selection” procurement, rather than cost-only process, …

Congressman Moran Wins 12th Term in U.S. House

Incumbent representing state's 8th Congressional District defeats Republican Patrick Murray, Independent Jason Howell and Independent Green Party's Janet Murphy in Tuesday's race.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran secured another term in office, soundly defeating Patrick Murray, Jason Howell and Janet Murphy in the 8th Congressional District.  "Tonight was a vindication of the President's efforts to get our country back on track after the worst recession in our nation's history," Moran said in a statement released late Tuesday night. "Tim Kaine will be our next Senator, a good, decent man who will serve the commonwealth with great distinction. Our nation faces major challenges that demand solutions. We owe it to the American people to come together and work toward reaching the kind of compromise necessary to get the country again moving forward." This is the second consecutive time Moran has defeated Murray. Moran will…
