Jay Howell re-elected, Dennis Findley and Paul Kohlenberger round out adult leadership.
The 2013 McLean Community Center board is finalized with Jay Howell winning re-election. The winners of the community center’s election must be confirmed by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, which will meet next on June 4. Dennis Findley and Paul Kohlenberger rounded out the adult leadership. The three men will serve three-year terms, according to the center’s Website. Sudharasan Sriram, a student at Langley High School and Steven Pardo, a student at McLean High School, will serve one-year terms each as youth leaders at the community center.

At Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships, the teams from McLean's high schools brought home five first-place finishes.
The men's and women's crew from Langley and McLean both came home victorious from the state championship Saturday at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championship (VASRA). The McLean women's crew took first place in the Lightweight Eight with a time of 5:38:70. McLean men's crew took first place in the 1st Eight Petite at 4:54:80. Langley's women took first place in the Women's 1st Four (6:05:20) and the Women's 2nd Four (6:52:10) and the Lightweight Four. The Langley Men's Junior Four took first place in their final, too (5:36:40). Nobody ever said winning was easy. This weekend, the Madison High School girls lacrosse team certainly did it the hard way, defeating Langley High School in a come-from-behind 17-9 win Saturday in the Liberty District Championships after waiting out two lightning delays on consecutive nights. It's the third consecutive Liberty District title for the Warhawks — all of them taken in games against Langley. Madison and Langley took the field as scheduled Friday night, and the Warhawks trailed at halftime, but came out after the break and quickly took a 9-8 lead. On Friday night, the Madison High School boys lacrosse team did something it hadn't done in years: post a win against the Langley Saxons. The Warhawks defeated Langley 10-2 on the Saxons' home turf on Friday night, taking the Liberty District Championship and entering next week's tournament as a top seed. Madison and Langley — five-time district champs — both stood at 11-5 (6-1) entering last night's title game, tied with Stone Bridge (11-3, 6-1) for best record in the district. Last year, the Madison High School defeated Langley High School in an 18-17 thriller to win the Liberty District championship. Friday evening, the teams are set up for a repeat of last year's title game, as the Warhawks and Saxons face off at Langley High School. Langley girls' lacross head Coach Richard DeSomma said his team is probably a combination of nervous and excited. "I think we all know it's going to be competitive. The Langley High School Saxons will face the McLean High School Highlanders for the last regular-season varsity baseball and softball games of the season Friday evening at 6:30. Both the softball and baseball teams face off at McLean High School. Baseball Both baseball teams have winning records this season. The McLean v. Langley varsity baseball game is in the running to be WUSA 9’s Game of the Week, the Langley student newspaper Saxon Scope reported. When the two teams met in April, Langley defeated McLean 12 – 4. In ranking of top U.S. high schools, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology remains the top school in Virginia, but slips in national standing.
Fairfax County is home to the top five public high schools in Virginia, according to the U.S. News and World Report’s 2013 Best High Schools rankings. U.S. News generated the rankings through a partnership with American Institutes for Research, looking at students’ performance on standardized tests and how successfully schools educated black, Hispanic and low-income students. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology was once again ranked the top school in Virginia. It was ranked No. 4 of all schools nationally, down from its No. 2 post in 2012. The event will benefit the American Cancer Society.
A group of students from Langley High School has organized a Relay for Life fundraising event April 27 and 28 to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event is one of only two Relay for Life events in Northern Virginia planned and organized completely by students. Nearly 300 students, teachers and parents from the Langley High community have signed up for the event, including 27 teams, mostly consisting of students. The event begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, when teams will pitch tents on the Langley High football field. One member of each team will walk on the track at all times, symbolizing the fact that cancer never sleeps. In annual Washington Post challenge index that ranks difficulty of high schools locally and nationally, McLean-area high schools are highly regarded.
McLean and Langley high schools are in the top tier among Washington-area high schools, according to Washington Post education reporter Jay Mathews' Challenge Index this year. McLean High School ranked 12th among D.C. area high schools this year. Langley ranked 26th on the regional list. McLean area schools ranked higher in Virginia than they did among regional counterparts: Langley was ranked No. 14 among all Virginia schools; McLean earned No. 5. Eighteen students from the McLean area took home grand prizes or first place prizes.
Two students from Langley High School won top honors at the 58th annual Fairfax County Regional Science and Engineering Fair over the weekend at Robinson Secondary School. Conor Maddry and Jason Cui both won individual grand prizes and first place prizes. Maddry’s project was called “A Novel Cost Effective Exoskeleton.” Cui’s project was called “MicroRNA Biomarkers for Anti-Tumor Response.” McLean High School’s Ashleigh Bowan and Katherine Prado were grand prize alternates for their project, called “Ultrasound Visibility of Biopsy Clips.” Langley High School’s Na He Jeon, working with Saroja Erabelli from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, was a grand prize nominee for “Autism: Comparing Effects of Auditory Stimuli…
