Explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon Monday could affect security measures at DC-area races.
Updated 10:14 p.m. Monday The explosions that killed three and injured more than 100 people at the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon could have implications for DC's Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) in October. For now the MCM team is focused on supporting Boston organizers in any way they can. "I really can't tell you at this time what we're planning or doing until I get together with our staff," Tami Faram, a spokesperson for MCM, told Patch in a phone interview. Faram is in Boston supporting the communications and marketing team for the Boston race; the security team for MCM is located in Quantico, Va. As hundreds of runners crossed the finish line at the 117th running of the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon, two explosive devices detonated from trash cans on Boylston Street in Boston, killing two people and wounding more than 100 others. There were 12 runners (eight men and four women) from McLean registered to run the 2013 Boston Marathon. The race shut down immediately when security became a concern, but it appears that at least 10 of McLean's runners finished the race before it ended. Police in DC and the surrounding area were on heightened alert Monday afternoon and evening. You may only have a few precious hours to register—the Marine Corps Marathon sold out in a record 2 hours, 41 minutes last year and registration pace may beat that record in 2013.
