Cava Mezze Grill Now Open in Mosaic District

Store offers Greek-inspired dishes with a new age twist.

Cava Mezze Grill opened its Mosaic District location (2905 District Ave.) Wednesday. Co-owner Brett Schulman said he and his business partners liked the explosion of local restaurants that are coming to the Mosaic District and they wanted to be a part of it. After founding the full-service Cava restaurant in Rockville, Md. in 2006, Schulman said the group decided to diversify the business and sell their dips and spreads in grocery stores and open smaller, fast service restaurants. “The grill idea was to take some of what we do in the restaurant and what we sell in the stores and put them into a fast paced grill,” Schulman said. “You can get a restaurant quality meal that’s not too expensive.” The grill features a menu derived from original…

Development in Tysons, Mosaic District Drive Local Economy

In annual State of the County address, Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova warns sequestration could impact revenues, is making business owners delay decisions.

Revitalization and development will drive Fairfax County's economy in 2013 and beyond, Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova said in her annual state of the county address Wednesday. Talking to members of the media Wednesday morning, Bulova said massive development projects in Tysons, Merrifield and Springfield will create "bright days and years ahead" — but the threat of sequestration was also making business owners hesitant to commit to a relocation or expansion in the county.  “Fairfax County’s future is in development,” Bulova said in her statement. “Aging commercial centers near mass transit, like Tysons, present especially valuable opportunities for attractive, transit-oriented mixed-use revitalization.” The county is hoping …

Redevelopment can be a good policy, as Sharon Bulova suggests. But it needs to be confined to areas near Metrorail, include sufficient improvements in infrastructure that are largely funded by the developers, and be vetted by all stakeholders for their input. Also, the Supervisors must protect both suburban and semi-rural areas in the county from encroachment. If all these things are done …   more ›

Dolcezza Gelato Opens First Virginia Location

The Mosaic District location, just southwest of Tysons Corner, opened Saturday.

Dolcezza, a gelato shop and coffee bar, opened in the Mosaic District Saturday. This is Deolcezza’s first location in Virginia, Eater.com reported. Dolcezza is offering 16 flavors of gelato for its opening and will have more flavors once the warm weather comes. The coffee bar will offer Verve coffee and pastries. The Mosaic District is southwest of Tysons Corner near Merrifield, at 2910 District Ave., Fairfax. According to Dolcezza’s website, “Our philosophy is simple: Be curious. Be spontaneous. Play with your food. Support local farmers and make exquisite gelato.” Taylor Gourmet Deli opened in the Mosaic District earlier this year.
