McLean-based business is splitting into two public companies.
McLean-based Science Applications International Corp. has announced it will cut $350 million in annual costs by reducing staff and facilities saving more in its purchases, according to the Washington Post. SAIC is currently splitting the business into two separate companies, a $4 billion company to handle services and a $7 billion IT company. The smaller company will retain the name SAIC, while the IT company will be named Leidos—as in kaleidoscope. The Post reports that SAIC has already trimmed about 800 indirect employees who typically work in areas like human resources, accounting and payroll since the split was announced last year. The Washington Post reported this morning: The contracting giant announced in August it would divide its company in two, forming a roughly $4 billion publicly traded company focused on government services and a roughly $7 billion publicly traded company specializing in technology for the national security, health and engineering sectors. Democrats, Republicans and hundreds of private sector government contractors gathered at the Crystal City Gateway Marriott on Monday afternoon to protest "sequestration," which would cut $500 billion of federal defense spending.
ARLINGTON — U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly on Monday called on Congress to cancel its upcoming five-week recess in order to solve looming $500 billion defense cuts that could cost Northern Virginia thousands of jobs. That sentiment was echoed by Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce President Jim Corcoran, who said the federal government shouldn't balance its budget on the backs of the defense industry. And Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, who arrived late to the "Stop Sequestration" rally thanks to a flight delay, said afterward he supported Connolly's idea. Capital One McLean-based Capital One, in a move to make its operations more efficient, announced last week that it will lay off 80 employees from its Bethesda office by early November. The Bethesda office joined Capital One when the McLean banking giant acquired Chevy Chase bank in 2009. The Bethesda location was primarily a home mortgage office, according to a story in Maryland’s Gazette.net. Capital One planned the closure in order to “consolidate its existing home loan sites,” according to Julie Rakes, a spokeswoman for Capital One. USA TODAY Named a new editor this week: David Callaway, former Editor in Chief of MarketWatch. Callaway will assume his new role in late July, according to a story posted on USA TODAY.
