Local Nonprofit Part of Boston Bombing Hoax

Photo of little girl from past Virginia race co-opted in viral fib.

Organizers of the annual Joe Cassella 5K in Great Falls are outraged a photo from their race was circulating as part of a hoax in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings Monday. "We would like to clarify that the picture circulating on the web and Twitter of a little girl wearing a Joe Cassella 5K bib claiming to have been killed at the Boston marathon is being used fraudulently," the Joe Cassella Foundation wrote on its Facebook page on Tuesday. The photo was used along with the claim that the girl in the picture, age 8, died while running in Boston in honor of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting victims. The information from someone with the Twitter name @HopeforBoston (now disabled) went viral (even though children are not …

Fairfax Teachers Union Launches Safety Survey

In light of Sandy Hook shootings and ahead of Virginia General Assembly kickoff this week, union turns to members to get opinion on guns in schools and what safe schools should look like.

In the weeks since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., politicians and advocacy groups have issued recommendations for how schools can try to prevent the tragedy — which killed 26 students and school employees — from happening again. A voice so far largely absent from those discussions in Fairfax and Northern Virginia: teachers. One of Fairfax County's largest teachers unions is hoping to change that, launching Tuesday a security and schools survey asking its 4,265 members about the use of guns in schools, where the system could use extra security personnel, how safe schools are now and how to make them safer, among other topics. "What I see more and more of is politicians posturing up and taking positions …

Letter to the Editor: What Makes an Adam Lanza?

The following essay was submitted to McLean Patch by Anne Speckhard, a McLean resident and an adjunct associate professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical School.

Adam Lanza was not a terrorist in the strict definition of the word: he had no political cause, but he terrorized a community and a nation and committed a heinous crime, reminding many of the Beslan School hostage-taking in which three hundred and thirty innocents were killed. I've been studying terrorism for ten years–interviewing terrorists, their family members and close associates, and their hostages – including those held in Beslan – and I find there are a lot of parallels between terrorism and mass shooting sprees.  For one, terrorists are made, not born.  The same is true for mass shooters. In the case of terrorism, I found that there is a "lethal cocktail" of terrorism that takes vulnerable individuals and moves them along the …

I don't have an issue with Obama's beef about limiting the access of citizens to assault rifles, but he should stop being a hypocrite. a) How about Obama not glorifying the death and violence associated with the military (e.g. Navy SEALs). I'm sure the SEALs would welcome much less profile than Obama and that kid in a candy store Panetta gives them. b) How about Obama talking to his Hollywood …   more ›

VA Governor Orders School Safety Review

In wake of Newtown shooting, Gov. Bob McDonnell wants to look at all resources to keep campuses from kindergarten through college safe.

In the wake of Friday's school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has announced a state plan to review school safety in Virginia at all levels. McDonnell said Monday he plans to identify statewide and locality, school division, college and university resource needs to "ensure that we are doing everything humanly possible to keep our children, young people and educators safe while they are in the classroom."  "Just as public safety is the bedrock responsibility of government, the safety of our young people must continue to be the top priority in our schools and our campuses," McDonnell said in a satement. In Fairfax County, there are regular safety and lockdown drills, and there was increased …

Dear Gov. Let's not place in lock down mode every school and home, private and public place just to protect ourselves from our neighbors and friends that are gun owners. The liberties of the many are now at stake. We fight over who can get a marriage license, but allow anyone to get a gun license. We can carry concealed weapons into any VA bar, just as long as we don't drink. We can't buy Sudafed…   more ›
