Fairfax County Public Schools students are on spring break—it just doesn't look very springlike this morning. Fairfax County government offices are opening on time this morning. FCPS programs and activities that do operate during spring break are operating on a two-hour delay. School Age Child Care (SACC) centers opened at 7:15 a.m. Adult and community education classes are starting on time Monday. Many main roads are mostly just wet now, but side roads are slushy or snowy; please use caution while driving. A rare late March snowstorm across the DC area dumped 1 to 4 inches (and counting) of snow across the region late Sunday night and Monday morning, leaving snow covered roadways and a winter scene five days after the start of Spring. Snow was expected to continue for several hours Monday morning, though it would have an increasingly difficult time sticking to the ground as temperatures rose. By noon, forecasters said some rain would mix in with the snow before turning back to snow showers Monday evening. It's still officially winter and Mother Nature might deliver a reminder on Monday, according to the National Weather Service forecast. Expect a rocky start to the week with a possible wintry mix of snow, sleet or rain Monday that could make for longer commutes. Temperatures will be low enough for snow showers and sleet during Monday morning's commute.
A harsh reminder that spring is technically still a few days away (it starts Wednesday), forecasters are predicting snow showers and sleet late Sunday night and Monday morning for McLean. Temperatures will drop from about 40 degrees Sunday afternoon to 31 degrees by Monday morning, with a 30 to 60 percent chance of precipitation, according to The Weather Channel hourly forecast. Precipitation should start as rain around 4 p.m. Sunday with temperatures in the upper 30s, but change to snow showers before dawn Monday. About 10 customers were without power Wednesday morning in McLean, and more may lose power as wet, heavy snow continues Wednesday.
Update 7 p.m. Wednesday - A few thousand people are without power in Fairfax County, mostly along the I-495 corridor in southern Fairfax County. In all, about 2,350 are without power tonight in Fairfax County, according to Dominion Virginia Power. Across all of Northern Virginia, there are more than 13,000 without power. More than 90,000 are without power statewide. The heaviest snow and related power outages tonight are in Albemarle County (near Charlottesville) and near Virginia Beach. It looks like McLean could get its most significant snow storm of the season Tuesday through Wednesday. The winter storm warning has been canceled, and the area is under a winter weather advisory. Predictions Wednesday morning indicated the area would see 6 to 12 inches of heavy, wet snow. The storm system moved into the area later than initially forecast Tuesday; snow to started after midnight Wednesday. Winds of up to 25 miles per hour, with gusts up to 35 miles per hour, are also possible. The Tuesday and Wednesday snowstorm will bring rain, then a wintry mix, snow, a mix and snow again before it exits the area.
Patch spoke Tuesday with meteorologist Calvin Meadows, who is with the Baltimore-Washington forecast office for the National Weather Service. Here's a timeline of what to expect from the snowstorm expected to hit McLean late Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Meadows: A "rain-snow" line will determine which areas see more snow than others, Meadows said. "Right now, the latest information indicates that west of 95, the best-case scenario is 5 inches of snow in Fairfax County. The worst-case [scenario] is 12 inches of snow."
