Community Meeting on Student Discipline Thursday at McLean High School

The Ad Hoc Community Committee on Student Rights and Responsibilities is gathering community input.

Four months after the Fairfax County School Board named members to a committee tasked with reviewing the system's student rights and responsibilities handbook, the group is seeking input from residents on what changes it should consider moving forward. The committee is meeting from 7 - 9 p.m. this Thursday, Feb. 7 at McLean High School.  The Ad Hoc Community Committee on Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R), created by the board Sept. 20, has traveled across the county this week and will continue to do so through Feb. 23, seeking parent, student and community member feedback on how to improve Fairfax County Public Schools' disciplinary procedures. ----------  Going? Registration isn't required, but will help organizers plan the …

Father Channels Grief Into School Board Campaign

Steve Stuban was inspired to run for office after his son, Nick Stuban, died in January.

What good can come of this? Steve Stuban, one of 10 candidates running for an at-large seat on the Fairfax County School Board, can trace his desire to seek the office back to this simple question. In late January, Stuban and his family were reeling from personal tragedy. His son, Nick Stuban, 15, committed suicide on Jan. 20. Seeking public office was the furthest thing from this father's mind. Seven months later, Stuban still needs a few deep breaths to brace himself before speaking of the loss.
