The soon-to-be Senator will serve on three committees important to Northern Virginia.
Senator-elect Tim Kaine, who will be sworn into office Jan. 3, will serve on three Senate committees important to Northern Virginia. His office announced he will serve on the following committees: Kaine had asked to join Armed Services, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Foreign Relations and Small Business and Entrepreneurship — in that order, according to a recent blog post on The Washington Post Web site. New Virginia senator says first order of business is to work on good solutions to nation's debt.
Tim Kaine (D), Virginia's newly-elected U.S. Senator, says his first order of business will be to lobby for longterm solutions for the country's fiscal situation. Kaine held a press conference in Richmond on Wednesday, one day after he defeated former Virginia governor and senator George Allen (R) in the general election. Kaine, governor of the state from 2006-10, earned 52 percent of the vote to Allen's 48 on Tuesday. McLean and Great Falls voters also favored Kaine over Allen. Find out how your precinct voted. Last month, Patch asked our readers in Northern Virginia for a favor. We wanted to submit questionnaires to both U.S. Senate candidates in Virginia and we wanted our readers to come up with the questions. You all delivered. Democratic candidate Tim Kaine raised about $17,000 less than Republican George Allen in the most recent filing period.
The U.S. Senate race between Tim Kaine (D) and George Allen (R) is neck-and-neck both in the polls and in campaign funds raised from Virginia residents. During the most recent filing period, which ran from May 24 to June 30, Kaine raised $667,000 in donations of $200 or more from Virginians, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, which compiles its data from OpenSecrets.org. Allen raised less, with $409,000, according to the data. In overall fundraising, Kaine is hanging onto a narrow lead with $3.6 million compared to Allen’s $3.5 million in Virginia, in donations of $200 or more from Virginians. Former Virginia first lady Anne Holton is going full speed ahead campaigning for husband Tim Kaine, the former governor who hopes to get elected to the U.S. Senate come November.
