Unified Prevention Coalition, Fairfax County police put on annual program for college-bound students and their families.
As this year's Fairfax County high school seniors start to receive acceptance letters and prepare for life away from home, the Unified Prevention Coalition of Fairfax County is once again trying to make the risks of underage drinking a part of college-bound conversations. The organization's annual "Perils of the College Drinking Culture” Forum — a panel discussion on underage and binge drinking designed for students and their parents — kicks off Thursday in McLean, with three other dates set later this spring at locations across the region. The program begins at 7 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium of McLean High School, 1633 Davidson Rd., McLean. Fairfax County groups launch series of conversations aiming to prevent student drinking and driving
Between 2006 and 2011, drunk drivers aged 15 to 24 were responsible for more than 1,900 car wrecks across Fairfax County. In an effort to create a broader community conversation about the issue, the Unified Prevention Coalition is hosting "Drinking and Driving by Our Youth and Young Adults," a series of five forums for students and their parents. The first two are scheduled for Tuesday night, at West Potomac High School and the West Springfield Government Center. While the coalition, a nonprofit that works toward prevention of violence and alcohol and drug use among young adults, hosts a number of events and forums each year, it's the first time the organization has put on this series. The difference, UPC Communications Director Becky York…

The Coalition has joined with the Fairfax County Police Department to use a recently received $200,000 state grant to find ways to reduce underage drinking. The grant was announced recently at the McLean Police District station. Capt. Bruce Ferguson, a UPC board member and commander of the Fairfax County Police Youth Services Division, said grant money will help the coalition get better …

McLean High School PTSA hosts a panel discussion on the Perils of the College Drinking Culture, sponsored by the Unified Prevention Coalition.
It's tough to be a teenager these days. The academic expectations are rigorous, and the social pressures can be daunting. And based on the turnout for a recent panel discussion on the problem of college-aged binge-drinking sponsored by the United Prevention Coalition, and the McLean High School PTSA, that feeling is shared by many. Nearly 250 parents and students attended a program on "The Perils of the College Drinking Culture" on a rainy Wednesday night at McLean High School. The students and parents who attended represented many local high schools including McLean High School, Langley, Madison, Thomas Jefferson, W.T. Woodson, Madeira School, Washington-Lee, Yorktown and Wakefield. They came hoping to learn more about what to expect …

I encourage binge drinkers to use DrinkControl app, which is is where you record the beverages taken. It keeps accounting of the expenses and converts your take-in quantities, such as glasses, into the units of alcohol and informs when you have approached or exceeded the limit in regard to moderate drinking. http://drinkcontrolapp.com   more ›
