Veterans of World War II, Korean, and Vietnamese, families of veterans and a company-size group McLean High School students gathered for an annual McLean Veterans Day observance in a memorial garden at the school Friday. Principal Dr. Deborah Jackson spoke movingly of the sacrifices of the families of veterans. Two weeks ago she and her family welcomed home a son-in-law returning from Afghanistan. She has a niece serving in the Army in Iraq. She lost a cousin in Vietnam. The flag that flew over the school once covered the casket of a 23-year-old Army officer killed in Vietnam in 1970. His daughter Paige Whitlock is now an assistant principal at McLean High. She was eight-months old  when her father John Wilson Roberts III was killed after …

Veterans Day 2011 -Places and events honoring those who served.

Thanking those who put on a uniform and defended us.

Veterans Day is Friday, Nov. 11. Here are some spots to pay respects: McLean - American Legion holds annual observance and program at  the Veterans Memorial McLean High School. It's wonderful. 11 am in the parking lot in the front of the school. Herndon - American Legion Wayne Kidwell Post 184, along with the Town of Herndon, will hold its annual Veterans Day Observance at the Veterans Memorial on the Herndon Town Green at 11 a.m. The Town Green is located behind the Herndon Municipal Building, 777 Lynn St. The observance will be held at 11 a.m., and will include the Herndon High School Junior Naval ROTC presenting the Colors. What's opened and closed in Fairfax for Nov. 11, Veterans Day Public Schools and School Offices – Open. County Government – Closed. Courts – Closed. Library – Closed. Fairfax Connector – Operating weekday service on most routes; except  routes 335, 395, 585, 595, and 597, which will not operate; and Route 980 will operate a reduced level of service. Fastran – Not in service. Park Authority – RECenters and lakefront parks open regular schedule. Nature centers and historic sites will be closed, with these exceptions: Nature Center at Huntley Meadows Park open noon to 5 p.m. Frying Pan Farm Park open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and visitor center open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Green Spring Gardens open noon to 4:30 p.m., but historic house is closed.
