Virginia Earns Failing Grade for Open Government, Porous Corruption Laws

Of 14 categories graded, nine earned a failing grade in Virginia's analysis

Virginia has been ranked the fourth worst state regarding open government and anti-corruption laws and practices, according to a report released Monday by the State Integrity Investigation project. Earning a failing score of 55, Virginia performed better than only Wyoming, South Dakota and Georgia, according to the report released by a group that includes The Center for Public Integrity, Global Integrity and Public Radio International. Of the 14 categories graded, Virginia received an 'A' in two: internal auditing and procurement. Anyone who has tried to lobby in Richmond on behalf of the public interest knows how right this failing grade is. Otherwise, would taxpayers still be handing over $40 million per year in subsidies to coal companies, at a time when we can't fund education, transportation and social services adequately?
