Colin Powell may be best known for his expertise as Secretary of State and as a four-star Army general, but he and his wife Alma are equally passionate about education. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell wasn't spotted anywhere around McLean on Monday. Powell, a McLean resident, traveled to Jamaica this week, heading a delegation tapped by President Barack Obama to celebrate the island's 50th anniversary of freedom, according to statement by the Jamaican government. Powell is the son of Jamaican immigrants and was raised in the Bronx. Jamaica, a former British colony, became an independent country in 1962.

Powell chatted amicably with the guests who lined up around the Books-A-Million on Chain Bridge Road to meet one of the most respected men in America. A couple near the front of line had six copies of his new book, "It Worked for Me: In Life and Leadership." "I hope some of these are gifts," he told the couple. He was assured they were.
