Review: 'The Wizard of Oz' at Madeira School

Skillful acting, complex scenery and more made the show a hit last weekend.

by Hannah Grudi of Chantilly High School We’re off to see the Wizard! A pop of color makes Oz, the yellow brick road, the Emerald City, and those famous ruby slippers so vivid for Dorothy and her friends. The Madeira School production of The Wizard of Oz brought their own unique color to the show this weekend, while still keeping its original hue. The Wizard of Oz is a classic, written by L. Frank Baum in 1900 and adapted into an iconic film in 1939. This is the second theatrical adaptation, and this musical dreamland brings to mind a children’s coloring book as Dorothy Gale ventures into the Land of Oz in hopes of simply finding her way home to her beloved Kansas family. Dorothy (Erica Glaser) kept a child-like innocence and kindness …

The McLean Ear: President, Governor Visit McLean, McLean Couple Makes Generous Hospital Donation

Political reports from around the area.

Virginia Governor Visits McLean: Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell stopped by an undisclosed location in McLean Tuesday evening to attend a fund-raising dinner for the Independence Virginia PAC.                               The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported in March that this super PAC was organized by Paul Bennecke, who formerly worked at the Republican Governors Association as the political director. Bennecke now has his own consulting firm, according to a spokesman for the Governors Association. Politico reported also in March that Bennecke said he was creating the PAC to raise money to support George Allen, a Republican former senator and governor, who is running for the Virginia Senate seat against Democrat Tim Kaine, also a former …

The Madeira School Welcomes a New Director of Safety

John Kenyon Takes the Reins from Bob Holzman

John Kenyon Jr., Madeira's latest director of safety, has spent his first two months of employment in a bit of a whirlwind, acquainting himself with the 376 acres of school-owned property and over 400 students and staff. Madeira is more of a college campus than a traditional high school, and comfortable shoes are a must. Also a must is filling the boots of the man who came before him—Bob Holzman, a McLean fixture who retired in February after 35 years with the school. Kenyon was a natural choice for the job. Before Madeira, he spent 30 years with the City of Fairfax Police Department, working his way up from patrol officer to lieutenant. He was eligible for retirement in 2011, so he took it. He managed to stay retired for six months before…

Madeira's Security Director Retires After 35 Years

Bob Holzman served 5 heads of school

Bob Holzman, Director of Safety & Security at The Madeira School, has seen a lot during his 35 years on staff and worked for five Heads of School. Multiple generations of girls came, learned, and went on to conquer; national celebrities and political figures passed through the campus gates, sometimes with secret service agents in tow (more on that later); and an unforeseen scandal forever changed the school. Holzman, 66, recently announced that he would be retiring Tuesday. He plans on spending more time with his grandchildren in Virginia Beach, as well as with his wife.  In the long term, they are considering a move to New Mexico. “Basically anywhere where I don’t have to look at snow,” he says. It would be a rough loss for McLean if he …

Pilar Cabeza de Vaca Embarks on Second Year at Madeira With Global Perspective

The Madeira School, McLean’s prestigious and private all-girls high school, has occupied its campus along Georgetown Pike since 1931. In those 80 years, the school has seen many eminent figures pass through its gate, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Langston Hughes, Jane Goodall and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Distinguished alumnae include Katherine Graham and Stockard Channing. Famed socialite and philanthropist Brooke Astor studied there but did not graduate. The school has also weathered some significant gales, including the arrest and incarceration of Jean Harris, its fifth headmistress, who was convicted of killing her lover, a well-known diet doctor, as well as the 1973 murder of a student on campus grounds.
