New president was installed at a Wednesday dinner.
A well-known McLean community volunteer became president of McLean Rotary Wednesday night at a festive dinner at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Jan Auerbach, who has spent the last 20 years volunteering for a number of nonprofit organizations in McLean and who joined Rotary only two years ago, was sworn in a president with her husband Irv and their son looking on. Auerbach created and helped organize McLean's first and highly successful Chocolate Festival that raised $25,000 in January. "My goals are to identify another fundraiser like the chocolate festival that will help bring the community together in an interesting and fun way, and to involve the entire Rotary membership in the decision-making on which charitable organizations to…

Seen Around Town This Week
What we saw travelling around town this week: UPDATE: There are two retail spaces on the first floor of 6707 Old Dominion Drive. One of those spaces is now occupied by Presidential Bank which moved from its previous Chain Bridge Road address. The second space was the space formerly occupied by Mae's Dress Boutique, which closed in March after more than 30 years. Workmen are now working in that space. McLean Patch will check the reports about the identity of the new tenant. ORIGINAL STORY: Presidential Bank moving from Chain Bridge Road next to the pizza shop, down Old Dominion Drive to building that formerly housed Mae's dress shop. Just had coffee at the Star*Nut Gourmet, one of McLean's four coffee shops. It's celebrating its 10th …

Business Person of the Year
McLean Rotary yesterday gave its Business Person of the Year award to the executive director of a nonprofit in Falls Church that helps the homeless of Fairfax County. "Being in the nonprofit world, people don't think of you as in business, but we have to run" a budget, manage a staff, etc., said Christopher Fay, executive director of Homestretch. The mission of Homestretch: To empower homeless families to get homes and become self-sufficient, Fay told Tuesday's Rotary meeting. "We put them in a home — the first day. A key to an apartment where they will live for three months or two years," Fay said. "Hope is the first thing and most important things that we have to help them develop," he said. "If you go there, you will fall in love with …

Tuesday, March 27, 2012
By Jan Auerbach, Rotary Club of McLean India has succeeded in being polio-free for one year through the concerted effort of its government and countless other organizations, particularly Rotary. There are nine or more National Inoculation Days per year throughout the country--at least twice per year in every location and six times in high risk areas—when families bring children to local centers to be vaccinated. For three to six days after the initial day, workers go house to house to vaccinate the remaining children. Each year, through the efforts of 2.3 million vaccinators and 150,000 supervisors, 172 million children are vaccinated and 220 million houses are visited. This year, 24 Rotarians from the United States participated in …
