Police: Fairfax Needs Tysons Police Station, More Officers

Metro and redevelopment will bring more crime to Fairfax County — which could require dozens more officers and a new station to help police the area's 1.1 million residents.

With massive redevelopment on the horizon, Fairfax County officials are starting to imagine ways to step up the police presence in the area — including where to build a brand new police station. The first phase of the Silver Line is expected to open at the end of 2013, and while it will help drive the county’s economy, it will also bring crime, says Fairfax County Police Captain Daniel Janickey, an officer in the McLean District Station. Janickey says the county needs to prepare for increases in robberies, assault, theft, property destruction and stolen vehicles, as well as a rise in illegal parking and traffic accidents. In order to effectively enforce the law and deter criminals from coming to Northern Virginia, Janickey recommended …

Supervisors Could Save 'Tysons' Last Forest' Tuesday

A proposed ramp through a Tysons park is expected to be taken off of the table.

Fairfax County residents campaigning to save “Tysons’ last forest and stream” could get their wish Tuesday, as supervisors are expected to take a ramp option off the table during a committee meeting. Tom Biesadny, the director of the county’s Department of Transportation, told The Washington Post further study of a ramp from the Dulles Toll Road that would pave right through the Old Courthouse Spring Branch Park might not be necessary. The proposed option has drawn the ire of residents for months and was formally opposed by the Board in November. The ramp would have connected the Toll Road to an extended Boone Boulevard, but more than 600 residents signed a petition to maintain one of the few green spaces left in the area. Transportation …

Subway Pedestrian Bridges Break Ground Today

Construction of Route 7 overpasses begins Monday with pile driving.

Construction begins today on the pedestrian walkway that will bring riders from Route 7 to the Silver Line station platform. The Dulles Rail Project will build two "pedestrian pavilions," one on either side of Route 7, to get passengers to the subway. The first pavilion gets under way along the westbound lanes at the old Merchant's Tire location between SAIC and The Big Screen Store. Pile driving will be starting at the Tysons Central 7 Station north pavilion near Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road (which means nearby residents will probably hear some noise during construction hours). Crews will drive steel piles into the soil to build foundations for pavilions. The pile driving will occur from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and the occasional …

Metro, Fairfax County Seek Silver Line Names

Five stations in Tysons area will be named this summer

What names will appear above the eight planned stations on Metro's Silver Line? The Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and Fairfax County are looking to the public for suggestions. The groups launched an online survey today asking residents for input on names for the new line, which will stretch through Tysons Corner, Reston and Herndon before ending at Dulles International Airport. The line is expected to be completed in 2013; the five stations in Phase 1 of the project will be named this summer, officials say. The survey, which is open until 5 p.m. March 21, includes proposed station names for each of the eight stops. Those throughout the Tysons area are noticeably altered from the nicknames local officials have given them …

Transforming Tysons: First Plans Get Final Approval, Walmart Breaks Ground

The New Tysons Corner Begins to Take Shape

Fairfax County's plans to transform Tysons Corner from an old suburb to a new city took two steps forward this week. On Tuesday, the Fairfax Board of Supervisors approved the area's first mixed-use and mixed-income development using the county's new zoning categories. The community, planned by the Georgelas Group, will begin to transform the area around Route 7 and Spring Hill Road into a community of high-rise apartments and condominiums, known as "Tysons West." On the other side of Route 7, ground was broken for the first Walmart in Tysons Corner, an "urban" Walmart that will be built on the former site of Moore Cadillac and Hummer. The new city of Tysons Corner built over the next 40 years will become the economic engine of the county. …
