Cyclist in Hospital With Life Threatening Injuries After Crash

Fairfax County Police investigating a bicycle vs. car crash in McLean.

A 50-year-old cyclist was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital with life threatening injuries Monday after a collision with a small SUV in McLean.

At about 6:47 p.m. a Ford Escape and a bicyclist collided in the intersection of Lewinsville Road and Titania Lane, said Lucy Caldwell, a spokeswoman with the Fairfax County Police Department.

Caldwell said the cyclist was traveling northbound on Lewinsville Road when the car turned left onto Titania Lane in front of the bicycle.

Caldwell said the cyclist hit the passenger side of the car.

“Police are still investigating it and no charges have been filed,” she said.

In May, a McLean man was injured in a vehicle vs. cyclist collision with an SUV in Falls Church.

Police said collisions between vehicles and cyclists in Fairfax County increased in 2012 from 2011 with 54 such collisions including one fatality. That was up from 44 accidents between bicyclists and vehicles with no fatalities in 2011.
