McLean's New Theater Seats Offer More Accessibility

Alden Theater has new look

Wow! That seemed to be general consensus of the audience at the Alden Theater Friday night as they settled into the theater's totally renovated seats.

"We used the original mounting, but the rest is new, said Sarah N. Schallern, Performing Arts Director for the Alden.

Here's how Schallern described the new seats: "In addition to the cosmetic benefits of the new seats, we also have quite a few more accessibility features:

  • More flexibility and options for wheelchair accommodations. We now have a variety of configurations that we can use to accommodate those in wheelchairs and their companions. As always, we ask that patrons communicate their need for wheelchair accessibility to the box office (703-744-9223) at least 48 hours in advance of the event.
  • Aisle seats in rows B, D, F and H of the orchestra section have armrests that lift. This accommodates those who may have trouble getting in and out of seats; people with canes, crutches or walkers; or those who would feel more comfortable with a little more room. These seats can be purchased both online and at the box office.

We’re very pleased that these enhancements will allow us to improve our service to patrons of a variety of abilities, ages, sizes and preferences.

You’ll also notice tonight that the seats seem higher. The “new mattress” effect of cushions that aren’t 22 years-old adds a little height to the seats. The armrests are also shorter, giving patrons more room to walk within the rows."

The cost to McLean taxpayers of updating the 425 seats: A bit over $160,000--- $16,000 more than originally budgeted. But the MCC board said the additional money would buy comfort and longer life to the seats coverings. This was the first updating in 22 years.

The Alden closed in August so the new seats could be installed for the opening season. Social Security, the new production of the McLean Community Players, debuted Friday night in a theater brimming with a new-seat-smell.

The Alden holds an open house on September 26 and 27  to introduce the neighbors to the new seats.
