Elderly man's death first fire fatality since 2010 in Fairfax

TUESDAY UPDATE 10:30 am:The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department has ruled a fatal fire Thursday night in a McLean apartment accidental.

Fairfax fire units responded to the fire in a second floor apartment at 1808 Old Meadow Road at approximately 9:40 p.m, according to a statement from the department.

Firefighters encountered a light haze and a fire that had been extinguished by a passing neighbor.  Carroll Adams, 91, who lived in the apartment alone, was transported by ground to Washington Hospital Center’s Burn Unit with life threatening injures, fire officials said.

He later died of his injuries. This is the first fire fatality in Fairfax County since September 2010.

While cooking at the stove, the victim's clothing caught fire causing thermal burns to his body, fire investigators reported.

Damage to the apartment is estimated at $2,000. The fire was confined to the kitchen area.

Fire Safety Tips for Elderly McLean Residents.

FRIDAY UPDATE: A 91-year-old McLean resident died early Friday morning as a result of the second and third degree burns he suffered when his clothing caught on fire as he was cooking, according to a spokesman for the Fairfax fire department.

The death was the first fire fatality in Fairfax County since 2010, said Dan Schmidt,  spokesperson for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. There were no fire deaths in the county in 2011, Schmidt said.

Fire officials identified the victim as Carroll Adams. They saidlived alone at 1808 Old Meadow Rd. His wife died a few years ago, Schmidt said.

The man was cooking  around 10 pm. in the kitchen of his second floor apartment when his clothes caught on fire and the fire spread rapidly, Schmidt said.

"A neighbor heard his cries for help and went to help him," Schmidt said.

The man was taken to the burn center at Washington Hospital Center, where he died early this morning, Schmidt said. The man suffered second and third degree burns over 40 to 50 percent of his body, fire officials said Thursday night.

The fire was contained to the kitchen area, largely due to the apartment sprinkler system, fire officials said.

The victim was taken by ambulance to the burn center at Washington Hospital Center.

The kitchen started in the kitchen and was contained to the kitchen area, a fire official said. The sprinkler system in the building extinguished the fire, the official said. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire was report around 10 pm.

The victim was not identified.
