UPDATE: Delay of Bridge Demolition, Night Time Noise to McLean

Bridge demolition, ramp opening delayed for at least a week

UPDATE: The opening of a new ramp from I-66 west to I-495 south scheduled to open today has been delayed until March 30.

The good news: the bridge demolition  scheduled for I-495 and I-66 that was also to begin tonight has been delayed until April 2.

All the work is part of the construction of new express toll lanes from Springfield to McLean. Megaprojects, the public-private partnership building the lanes gave no reason for the delays.

Megaprojects, MegaProjects, the public-private partnership building the toll lanes sent this notice to the neighbors:

A new and much improved flyover ramp from I-66 west to I-495 south will open on or about March 23.  Demolition of the old ramp will start immediately and take 2-3 weeks of night work to complete.

Bridge demolition will then shift to the old left exit from I-495 north to I-66 west.  A portion of this left exit was dismantled in October 2011.  The remaining segment crosses over both the Metro's Orange Line and I-66 west.  Demolition will take longer than past bridges because work must be coordinated with Metro's schedule.

Both demolition operations will produce significant noise, especially as crews separate steel from the concrete decking. Crews will do everything possible to expedite the work,
Demolition work will take place seven nights a week, between 10 p.m.-5 a.m.   Demolition is performed at night when traffic volumes are lowest to ensure the safety of all motorists and our workforce, and to minimize the impact on traffic.

MegaProjects, a public-private partnership, is building the toll lanes down the center of the Beltway from Springfield to just beyond the Lewinsville Road bridge.
