Traffic Alert: More Overnight Beltway, Dulles Toll Road Closings Ahead

This week's list of traffic turmoils that will confront the neighbors  caused by the dual construction of the Metro and the HOT Lanes in Tysons's Corner.

Night Closures on Southbound I-495 Dec. 19-20 and Ramp from Southbound 123 to Southbound I-495, Dec. 19

The three right lanes of southbound I-495 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday, from Lewinsville Road to Route 123 for ongoing Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project bridge construction. In addition, the ramp from southbound I-495 to southbound Route 123 also will be closed.
 
Traffic will be instructed to continue on southbound Route 123, turn right onto International Drive, turn right onto Galleria Drive, turn left onto northbound Route 123 to southbound I-495.en a slight left on to northbound Route 123 to northbound I-495.
 
On Tuesday, Dec. 20, the three left lanes of southbound I-495 will be closed from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am, from Lewinsville Road to Route 123.

Bridge Construction in Median of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) Will Close Spring Hill Road, Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road Intersections through End of Year; Multiple Overnight Closures and Detours Required
 
The large yellow-and-blue truss that has been constructing the aerial guideway in the median of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) in Tysons Corner is approaching the Spring Hill Road intersection. Overnight closures will be required as the bridge is built over the intersection. This requires the middle of the intersection to be closed between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
 
Thru traffic along both directions of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) still will be allowed, but for safety reasons, thru traffic on Spring Hill Road will not be allowed, and will be detoured by using Route 7 as follows:

Southbound Spring Hill Road thru traffic and motorists wanting to turn left on to eastbound Leesburg Pike will need to turn right on to westbound Leesburg Pike, then U-turn at Tyco Road/Westwood Center Drive, and continue on eastbound Leesburg Pike toward Spring Hill Road.

Northbound Spring Hill Road thru traffic and motorists wanting to turn left on to westbound Leesburg Pike will need to turn right on to eastbound Leesburg Pike, U-turn at Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road, and continue on westbound Route 7 to access Spring Hill Road.

There will be several nights over the next month when bridge crews will close both the Spring Hill Road and Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road intersections.

Drivers should expect approximately 10- to 15-minute travel delays if traveling through this area during these closures, which are expected to last through the end of the year.
 
The truss will continue to move west toward the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267). Once the Spring Hill Road crossing is complete, the next intersection to be crossed will be Tyco Road/Westwood Center Drive, expected in early 2012.
 
The bridge construction over Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road also is expected to complete in early 2012. It is being constructed using ground-based cranes instead of the truss because of the intersection's width.
 
Starting at 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 19 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) east at I-495 will be closed to prepare for a traffic shift to reopen the far left lane. Overnight detours will be in place.

Overnight detour: Route 267 eastbound traffic will be directed to exit onto I-495 south to Exit 46B, Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) north, and follow signage to the Dulles Toll Road east.
 
By 5 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, all lanes on eastbound Route 267 at I-495 will be reopened to pre-construction conditions.
 
As part of the Capital Beltway High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes Project, crews closed the far left lane earlier this year to make way for bridge construction. By advancing work at this interchange crews were able to reopen the left lane ahead of schedule.

I-495 north from Lewinsville Rd. overpass to Old Dominion Dr. - Two right lanes closed Monday - Thursday nights for sound wall installation.

Dulles Toll Rd. (Route 267) east after toll plaza - Road closed  Monday and Tuesday nights for traffic shift. Traffic will be directed to use the Dulles International Airport Access Hwy. east. 

Dulles Toll Rd. (Route 267) east at I-495 - Two right lanes closed Thursday night for overhead sign work. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.

Dulles Toll Rd. (Route 267) east to I-495 north and south - Ramps closed Monday - Thursday nights for overhead sign installation. Traffic will be directed to continue east to Exit 19A, Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) south and follow signs to I-495 north or south.
I-495 south to Exit 46A, Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) south - Ramp closed Monday and Tuesday nights for bridge work. Traffic will be directed to continue south to Exit 47B, Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west, make a right onto International Dr. north and follow signs to Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123).
