McLean Rotary Installs New Officers

A well-known McLean community volunteer became president of McLean Rotary Wednesday night at a festive dinner at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.

Jan Auerbach, who has spent the last 20 years volunteering for a number of nonprofit organizations in McLean and who joined Rotary only two years ago, was sworn in a president with her husband Irv and their son looking on.

Auerbach created and helped organize McLean's first and highly successful that raised $25,000 in January.

"My goals are to identify another fundraiser like the chocolate festival that will help bring the community together in an interesting and fun way, and to involve the entire Rotary membership in the decision-making on which charitable organizations to fund," she said.

"I accepted the nomination because I believe I have some organizational skills that can help the club and because they asked; in Rotary, if you are asked to serve, you say yes," Auerbach said.

The audience of about 100 included Dranesville Supervisor John Foust, Deborah Jackson, a Rotary member and outgoing principal of , attorney Pam Danner and George Sachs, executive director of the McLean Community Center. Both are Rotary members.

Auerbach traveled to in February as part of Rotary's program to help India become polio-free. The program has succeeded.

Auerbach worked for the Environmental Protection Agency for 29 years. Then she started her second career in the community. She has held leadership roles with the McLean Community Center Governing Board, the Safe Community Coalition, The McLean Citizens Association Education Committee, and the McLean Citizens Foundation, according to the McLean Rotary website.

For the last nine years, she has been active with the Literary Council of Northern Virginia, tutoring students and matching tutors and students in McLean and Falls Church, the website reported.

Fred Dent was named Rotarian of the Year for his service to the organization.

Other officers are Dale Lazar, president-elect, Mike Holleran vice president, Paul Sawtell, secretary, Lynn Heinrichs, treasurer, and Paul Ward sergeant-at-arms.
